"Jockey Club Smart City Walk Project" Introduction
Hong Kong Blind Union has been striving to improve the life quality of people with visual impairment with the use of information technology. In 2017, we started the "Jockey Club Smart City Walk Project" which is one of the "The Chief Executive's Community Project List 2017", funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
With the rapid development of technology, smart mobile devices strengthen the connection with external community for the visually impaired people and elderly, and enhance their independency of living. Through the application of various navigation technologies, the "Smart City Walk" mobile application (App) is developed under this project. The App provides audio and text navigation instructions to users in both outdoor and indoor venues, allowing people-in-need (like visually impaired and the elderly) to walk around independently.
Training on smart mobile devices is provided to visually impaired persons and elderly. In addition, seminars and sharing sessions are also organized to arouse public's awareness on visually impaired people.
